Classroom Procedures

kids Classroom Procedures

School Hours:  School starts at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.  Students are counted tardy when they come in after 8:20 a.m.  Please know that first grade is fast-paced and filled with new things each day.  When a child is frequently tardy or absent, it can really disrupt their first grade experience.

Every Thursday, the school day ends at 1:30 p.m.

Mail:  All student work as well as newsletters/parent notes will be sent home on Thursdays.  Each student will have a "Thursday Folder."  Please check your child’s folder every Thursday and look over all of the papers that were completed and sent home.  This will help you to know what we are currently studying in class and will also give you some good information that you can discuss with your child.  This is also a good time to praise your child for the work that they completed that week.  Please return your child's Thursday folder as soon as possible so we can reuse them the following week.

Homework:  Monday-Thursday,  I will send home a homework assignment to be completed with parent/adult supervision.  I encourage all parents to assist with this work and gain a better understanding of where your child is at in the learning process.  Your child should be able to complete most assignments independently.  I keep track of who brings back homework, and I give a small prize to students when homework is returned. Typically, this homework should take only 5 minutes to complete and should not take much time.

Birthdays:  Birthday's are special and we do take time to recognize these special days!  If your child's birthday is on a weekend, we will celebrate on the Friday before their birthday (or the Monday after, if you prefer).  Children with summer birthdays will have a group birthday party that is held at the end of the school year.  On your child’s birthday, he/she may bring in store purchased treats to share with the class.  This is not required, however.  Plan to bring treats for 20 students, or contact me to get the exact number of students that are currently enrolled.  The celebration will usually be held during the afternoon.

Absences:  Whenever your child is going to be absent for any reason, please let the office know or send a note to school with your child.  I will collect all missed assignments that are to be completed upon their return.

Toys:  Please help to remind your child that they are not to bring toys to school.  Not only does this cause distractions, but I would feel horrible if something valuable was lost/stolen.  There will be opportunities throughout the year for students to bring items from home to share during show and tell.  I will send notes home in advance to let you know exactly when we will have our show and tell day.

Student of the Week:  Every week, a student will be Student of the Week.  A note will come home explaining what this is, but it is really a chance to celebrate your child and how special he/she is!  Your child can bring 5  pictures of themselves at any age that will be displayed in the classroom.  You are also able to bring your child's favorite book (that I can read or that your child can read) and a favorite snack if you would like, but it is not required.  You will also fill out a poster at home that will displayed all week with the pictures.  The pictures will be returned the following Monday.

Specials Schedule:  PE will be every Tuesday and Wednesday so please make sure that your child wears tennis shoes on those days. Music is on Tuesday and Friday. Art is on Thursday and library book check out will be on Friday.  Library books will be able to go home on Friday after check out, but please make sure that your child returns them by the following Friday so that he/she can check out some new books.

‚ÄčLunch:  Lunch is at 10:55-11:15 and recess is from 11:15-11:30.
