Dolch Words

Dolch Sight Words

In order to read and write fluently with comprehension and meaning, children must be able to automatically read and spell the words that they see most frequently.  Dolch Sight Words are a list of words that students encounter frequently in reading and writing.  Sight words make up 50-70% of all written material contained in newspaper articles, magazines, textbooks, children's stories, novels, and more. Most Dolch words cannot be "sounded out" and have to be learned by "sight," that is, memorized.  Students need to recognize each word as quickly and effortlessly as possible without having to sound out.  This allows students to focus their attention on the more mentally demanding task of understanding what they are reading.

Ralston emphasizes Dolch Sight Words for each grade level.  I have listed below the Dolch words that we will practice reading in first grade.  I encourage you to practice these words at home. Thank you so much for your help and effort.
